The assailant was armed with an assault rifle and a handgun, reported the New York Times. The gunfire, which began inside the club, continued outside when an officer working at the Pulse attempted to confront him. The gunman then went back into the club, resumed shooting and took hostages. At around 5 a.m., the police decided to rescue the hostages, detonating a "controlled explosion" to help clear the club. At least nine officers were involved in the shooting with the gunman. The gunman died in the shootout and an officer was also injured. The gunman did not belong from the Orlando area and was organized and well-prepared, said the police. The total number of causalities is yet to be determined by the authorities. The police called it a "mass casualty" event. The police also said the gunman was carrying a device and that the officers were reportedly searching the club for possible explosives. (ANI)
