These were the observations made by Karnataka High Court Chief Justice SK Mukherjee, while hearing a petition questioning the observance of Tipu Jayanti by the state government. Hearing a petition filed a man named Manjunath, Justice Mukherjee said Tipu was no freedom fighter. He was like any other kings who fought against invaders to protect their state. He further said that the government should “let Tipu rest in peace, now”. On claims that Tipu forcibly converted thousands of people to Islam, the Justice said it was natural for any king to consolidate his state. The hearing has been adjourned to Thursday. The Tipu Jayanti is scheduled for November 10. The state government has been firm on celebrating Tipu Jayanti despite severe opposition by the BJP.
