The council authorities accompanied by Bagalkot Social Workers (BSW) garlanded those who went to defecate in open spaces. The council's appeal to people to construct toilets had fallen on deaf ears. “People here are still used to defecating in open spaces. Despite educating them, they prefer to go to the fields,” lamented a council officer. The problem is acute in Old Bagalkot area, where residents still go near the river bund to answer the call of nature. The council officials and BSW volunteers, who had their plan ready, stopped these residents near the bund and garlanded them. They were told about the pollution and threat of epidemics due to open defecation and urged to use toilets. Embarrassed, many returned with their mug. A few, who spotted the officials with garland, ran back to their residences. The drive was conducted in Halepet, Jainpet, Pankha Mosque area and Khilla area.
