Clearing misconceptions about the true nature of sport, Dr Hegde said sports activities had been mistaken for competition with others. "Western culture suggests competing with others while Indian culture suggests competing with ourselves. But, we have been following Western culture blindly. It is not necessary that sportspersons have perfect health. Health is related with mind and not body," he added. Mangaluru South MLA J R Lobo called for more emphasis on sports training. "Smaller countries than India fetch more medals in sports events. Hence, the sports talents from nation need to be nurtured in a systematic way," he said. Kabaddi player Jagadish Kumble, athlete Abhishek Shetty, kabaddi player Rakshith S, basketball player Sandhya C R, kho-kho player Deeksha K, high jumper SP Supriya were felicitated. Specially abled sportspersons, retired physical education teachers and national-level sports talents were also honoured on the occasion.   Zilla Panchayat President Meenakshi Shanthigodu presided over the programme. Kshema Dean Dr Sathish Bhandary, DDPI Walter D’Mello, city corporation’s opposition leader Roopa D Bangera, and District BJP General Secretary Brijesh Chowta attended the function.
