A livid CM reportedly told the MLA that he should have approached him if he wanted a RS ticket for his family instead of allowing his brother to approach the JD(S). “You are well aware of the fact that senior Congress leader Oscar Fernandes, who also belongs to your region (coastal Karnataka) is contesting on Congress ticket,” Siddaramaiah was quoted as saying. In his defence, Bava replied that he had no control over Farooq and that the latter had taken the decision independently after directly contacting JD(S) leaders without his family’s consent. He also said that he was a “pure Congressman” and his vote would be “against his brother”. The JD(S) has fielded Farooq, the proprietor of Fiza group and president of Bearys Welfare Association, for the Rajya Sabha polls from Karnataka. Observers feel that HD Deve Gowda’s clever ploy has succeeded in checkmating rebel MLA Zameer Ahmed Khan and also sent a strong message to Siddaramaiah, who has been projecting himself as messiah of the poor and the downtrodden.
