Although the festival was held in August, the video has emerged now. In the video that is being aired by television channels show the former corporator shaking a leg with the dancers that defies the fact that it was a temple festival. He is also shown throwing currency notes on women dancer, who gave him a peck on the cheek. Ironically, his wife Kumari Palanikanth is the sitting corporator of the same ward. Kumari Palanikanth Palanikanth couple Palanikanth with MLA Ashwath Narayan However, he outrightly denied that he had done anything wrong. Defending himself, he told a television channel that there was nothing to be termed as ‘dirty dancing’. “It was a three-day festival of religious, social and cultural programmes. Cultural programmes are held on the last day and those dancers were part of cultural programmes. I just danced with them for fun and what’s wrong with that. Wouldn’t anyone dance with a girl (read dancers),” he retorted. He went on to say that he invited those dancers from Tamil Nadu and they are professional dancers. “I have given those women dancers an opportunity to present their talents. By calling it dirty dancing, you are insulting those professional dancers,” he shot back. When asked how those dancers and dance programmes qualify for a religious event, he said he has been organising Maramma festival for the past 19 years and it is quite popular in his ward. Mayor G Padmavathi condemned such programmes. “It’s shameful to organise such events in the name of religious festival,” she said.
