In its historic special session convened in the wake of Apex Court order to release 6,000 water to Tamil Nadu for ten days, the Council observed that the four reservoirs – KRS, Kabini, Harangi and Hemavathi – in the Cauvery basin have low level of water. Tamil Nadu requires water for its standing Samba crops but three districts and Bengaluru are dependent on these four reservoirs for drinking and agricultural purpose. In this regard, the government must prioritise drinking needs of the people and not to release water to Tamil Nadu. Council Chairman DH Shankarmurthy urged the government to assess the water storage in the reservoirs and prioritise for only drinking purpose. The session was adjourned, later.
