Newly elected members of the ruling AIADMK in Tamil Nadu yesterday elected Jayalalithaa as the leader of the AIADMK legislative party. Fighting heavy odds, the 68-year-old AIADMK supremo proved her critics wrong again as her party has been steered to power for a second consecutive term. This is for the first time since the death of former chief minister M.G. Ramachandra Menon, who is popularly known as MGR, in 1987 that a party will return to power for a consecutive second term inTamil Nadu. Jayalalithaa's charisma won her a second term, though her arch rival Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) managed to win more than 70 seats. The AIADMK won 134 seats whereas the M Karunanidhi led party has won 89 seats in the assembly polls contested for 232 seats. (ANI)
