But the last rites conducted on her were in total violation of the community rituals. It hurt the family members,” fumed Varadarajan, a relative of Jayalalithaa’s brother Vasudevan, who lives in Srirangapatna. The family members, guided by priest Ranganatha Acharya performed the last rites as per the community tradition, albeit to a doll made of hay that represented Jayalalithaa. “We consign the body to flames, but this was not done with Jayalalithaa. She is an inspiration to our community, but was deprived of a decent cremation as per the Iyengar tradition. This is our way to help her rest in peace,” said the cousin, while speaking to a television channel. J Jayalalithaa, who passed away last week was buried next to her mentor MG Ramachandran’s grave at Marina beach. It was not Jayalalitha’s relatives, but her close aide Sasikala, who conducted the last rites for the AIADMK supremo.
