On being questioned on Wednesday, Maria reportedly provided contradictory statements during the interrogation. "She said she slapped and beat up shop owners at National Market for shouting at them for kissing in public. She also said she was high on vodka, beer and red wine,” said a police official from Upparpet. Maria told the police that she was with her boyfriend from morning 10 to 3pm and had drunk two bottles of beer, one bottle of vodka and two bottles of red wine. She and her boyfriend had come to National Market to get their mobile phone repaired. “Her statements are very confusing. She has not yet shown her visa and passport. She says she is on a tourist visa and her visa will expire in a day. When we asked Reva college about her, the college said no such person was studying in their college,” said an official. Meanwhile, the Nigerian Embassy has sought clarification from Bengaluru police after a video featuring Maria being taken away with her hands tied went viral. In their reply, the city police justified the action saying that Maria was out of control and she had to be subdued.
