Though these emails appear routine, the fact that they are being sent during days of relentless I-T raids and warnings from the Central government has got citizens a bit worried. The email states: “As per the records, it is observed that you have not filed your Income Tax Return for Assessment Year 2015-16. Please submit your online response. Non-filers with potential tax liabilities are identified and monitored under Non-filers Monitoring System (NMS). A "Step by Step Guide" for NMS is also available for detailed guidance on the e-filing portal home page under the 'Help' section. If you need any assistance in submitting the response, please call the e-filing toll free number 1800 4250 0025 or send an email on firstname.lastname@example.org.”One employee, on condition of anonymity, said that the email, which warned of possible penalties, had him worried. He said that he had paid the tax but failed to upload the returns online. And he said that he knew several such people. The employee said the I-T department should not club the salaried class with tax evaders and money launderers as their taxes are deducted at source. But tax consultants said such fears were unfounded, as employees can pay tax or furnish details in a matter of minutes.
