A total of 1,22,139 children are out of school in the state! This piece of information was provided by Union Minister of Human Resources and Development Prakash Javdekar at the Lok Sabha on Monday. According to the minister, the data presented by him was based on the IMRB survey conducted in 2014. The survey found that a total of 1,22,139 children do not go to school in the state. What’s more shocking is that majority of the children who are out of school belong to Schedule Caste followed by Christian community. At least three independent surveys were commissioned by the MHRD in 2005, 2009 and 2014. The findings revealed that there has been a substantial reduction in the number of children out of school in the country. The number of such children in the age group of 6-13 years was 134.56 lakh in 2005. However, this was reduced to 81.50 lakh in 2009. Further, in 2014, the number was reduced to 60.64 lakh in 2014. Today, the total number of children out of school is 73.96 lakh. While the number has come down in majority of the states, Karnataka shows a different picture, the minister observed. However, a survey conducted by the Sarva Shiksha Abhiyana (SSA), Karnataka, shows that only over 9,000 children are out of school in the state. “We are not aware of this data presented by union MHRD minister in Loka Sabha. But as per our records, the number has drastically come down in the state in the last two years thanks to various interventions undertaken by the Department of Public Instruction and SSA under,” said an officer from the state education department.  Total number of children out of school in Karnataka:  1,22,139 (Survey report in 2014) and 60,64,230 in the country. Schedule Caste students: 52,769Schedule Tribe students: 10,034Muslims: 560Christians; 13,147
