Submitted by alvin on Mon, 2016-11-14 14:11 Bengaluru: Anganwadis in the state will now provide midday meals to pregnant women and lactating mothers. The ambitious project of the state government will be launched on a pilot basis in four taluks – Madhugiri, Jamakhandi, Manvi and HD Kote – from December 15, said Women and Child Welfare Minster Umashree, reported The Hindu. The move is aimed at improving maternal health with proper nutrition for pregnant women and lactating mothers. The meals will include egg and milk and those who do not eat egg will be provided two glasses of milk.According to minister Umashree, the project which will be carried out for three months will be extended to other districts, slowly. The government provides rice, wheat, jiggery and green gram to these women under the Integrated Child Development Service. But many women do not consume it for themselves but use the ingredients to cook for the family, observed S Varalakshmi, State president of the Anganwadi Noukarara Sangha. She appreciated the government’s initiative.
