At last con couple traced but begins cat-and-mouse game

Submitted by alvin on Thu, 2016-10-27 16:15 After Josephine said in a complaining tone that the couple had even borrowed money from her,I assured that she will get all her money back. I enquired about the couple’s whereabouts as I knew they could not be staying in Josephine’s hut.She agreed to take us to a tourist resort on the beach side where the couple had been hiding. On the way, I asked Mulla, if they are really staying in the resort should we arrest them on the spot or take them to our guest house and arrest them later. My colleague Mulla suggested that we take them out of the resort under some pretext, go to our lodge and then arrest them. For, arresting the duo at the resort would attract the local police’s attention and they may take the credit for our efforts. It was also possible that we would not be in a position to take the couple with us as the local police might request the jurisdictional court for grant of police custody. Considering all these points, we decided that at any cost we would cajole the couple to move out from the resort. After about 10 minutes of walk, she pointed towards a house where the couple were staying. We were about 10 yards from the house. Suddenly, I saw a person running out of the house. He ran and stood behind a house about 20 meters away. He was in his shorts. To my surprise, he was Michael D’souza whom we were hunting for, all these days! I was on cloud nine but I controlled my emotions. He was looking at us and brushing his teeth. Josephine asked me why he ran like that. I said 'I don't know' and as planned we did not arrest them there. I just stayed there with Mulla and asked Josephine to tell Michael that we have come from Bangalore with money to give it to him. Josephine did what I said.Michael came a little closer and asked who we were? In a flash, I told him “I’m Lava kumar, Jr advocate from the office of advocate Mohammed Ali.” Incidentally, Mohamedh Ali was his advocate who had appeared for Michael and Ulrike in the Bangalore court, when they were initially arrested by the High grounds police in Bangalore.I thought, if I introduced myself from Mohammed Ali’s office, Michael would be relaxed and he might not suspect me. He came closer to me and said "But, I haven’t seen you in Mohammed Ali’s office." At this, I said bluntly, "I have seen you, though.”Looking at my colleague Mulla, he asked me who he was. Without blinking, I told him, Mulla was my friend and he is a Chilly merchant. I told him Michael that Mulla accompanied me to keep me company. That seems to have satisfied as he did not probe further. In fact, Mulla is from Byadgi near Hubli known for hot red chillies and this came to my rescue. He then led us into the resort. Ulrike came out from the kitchen. She was wearing a shawl. I remembered the STD booth girl telling me that she wore a shawl whenever she went to make call from the booth. She was in her mid twenties. He introduced her and asked her to make some coffee for us. While she was still in the kitchen, Michael asked me how we found them. I told him it was absolutely necessary for Mohammed Ali to trace them because the Bangalore court has ordered him to produce the couple as he bailed them out but they vanished before getting their papers cleared.I told him that he should not have done the vanishing act and put my boss in an embarrassing position. He said sorry for what all happened, but again asked how we reached him. I said Ali contacted Ulrike's mother and collected their present whereabouts at Velankanni.Even today, I wonder how these spontaneous replies, now I can call it lies, came from me for his probing questions. We were definitely not prepared for such queries from Michael.I told him that he should appear before the court at Bangalore and obtain regular bail. In the same breath, I also told him that the Bangalore police have spread a wide net to catch the couple and that he should wait for an appropriate time to appear before the court, get bail and vanish again silently, without giving any clue to the police. He sought to know whether it was possible. I told him that advocate Ali has made some arrangements in consultation with some court officials and in all probability, it should happen. I told him that he should come up to Hosur and stay in a hotel. He will then be taken to Bangalore to get the bail.He agreed but pleaded that he is financially broken. I said him not to worry as Mohammed Ali has sent some money through me. He was elated and said that he would remember this help forever.Ulrike served coffee to both of us. As we were sipping our coffee, Michael looked at me wearing a mischievous smile and said “Can I be sure that you are not cops?"I was taken aback by Michael’s query. But, I regained my composure and said “Do you think the cops can sport their hair this long, wear jeans and sports shoes and move around freely like this, Do you really suspect us Michael?”He said “Sorry friends, I’m just kidding.”As he was chatting with us, he was looking at my waist. I felt a bit uneasy and stealthily bent my face down to see whether something was wrong there. I was shocked to see the lanyard of my pistol jetting out of my tucked in shirt. (Lanyard is the chord, leather or cotton fastened to the pistol or revolver).I thought for a moment that I’m betrayed. But I kept my powder dry as if nothing happened. Luckily, he didn't ask about it.He changed his attention and asked me about the money. I told him that the money was kept in the hotel room and he could get it anytime he needed. Then he wanted me to go back and get the money from the lodge. I agreed. But I was bit anxious, as I didn't want to leave my colleague alone. He might suspect him, overpower him and run away. But my colleague, Mulla, was equally tough and it wouldn't have been that easy to escape from him.We had no money to give it to them but wanted Michael to come out of the resort to our lodge. As I was thinking, Michael said "I’ve little work in the town, better I come with you. Is that ok for you?" As I was thanking god, Ulrike asked whether she too could join us. I was delighted at her proposal. To be continued…
