The newly elected mayor spoke with Bfirst.in on her plans for the development of the city.Bfirst: What are your plans to improve the infrastructure of the city? Mayor: The government has agreed to provide Rs7, 000 crore for the BBMP. We have already taken road projects worth Rs2, 000 crore. Major roads are being developed. However, we will not depend only on government funds. The BBMP will bring revenue through its tax collection. In the current financial year, the BBMP has collected Rs1,850 crore out of the target of Rs3,100 crores. Major area of my focus will be on revenue generation and roads development. Bfirst: There have been complaints from BJP corporators that non-Congress wards are being neglected? Mayor: These complaints are false. I am the mayor for the city and every ward is my ward. There is no step-motherly treatment towards non-Congress wards. Bfirst: Previous mayor had taken a tough stand on encroachers and demolished homes on SWDs. But it was later stopped. People say the BBMP yielded to pressure from the real estate lobby. How will you handle the problem? Mayor: All the development works undertaken by the former mayor will be continued. With regard to the demolition drive, the palike will go by the directions of the deputy commissioner and the court order. There is no pressure and resurvey was done in all places before the demolition. Bfirst: The footpaths and roads are in bad condition. When will Bengalureans get good roads? Mayor: We are focused on elections in 2018. Bengaluru is our top priority. Hence these issues will be addressed.
