According to sources, JD(S) might have settled for the post of deputy mayor but it did so only on two conditions: the party demanded chairmanship of eight standing committees and a mayor of their choice. Sources said the JD(S) could back Shantinagar corporator Soumya Kumar over G Padmavathi, as the latter carries the JD(S) baggage with her and is backed by DK Shivakumar, whose relations with Deve Gowda are not that great. This could work in favour of Soumya, who is a two-time corporator from Shanthinagar ward. She is backed by her patron and two-time MLA NA Harris. “It is Deve Gowda who is going to choose the Congress mayor, as he has the numbers to dictate the terms and conditions,” said a source from the Congress. Transport Minister Ramalinga Reddy said, “There is a tough fight between the two contestants. The candidate will be announced by the CM after another round of consultation with Deve Gowda.” The minister said all Congress corporators had been summoned to the KPCC office at 4pm. “Corporators were briefed about tomorrow’s voting process,” added Reddy.
