Cyclone effect: Flood-like situation in Bengaluru

Submitted by alvin on Fri, 2016-07-29 14:58 Bengaluru: Due to cyclone in Tamil Nadu coast, Bengaluru city also received nightlong rain. The weather department reported that the city received 4cm rain on Thursday night.             The impact was such that many homes flooded in south Bengaluru and traffic in many places came to grinding halt.   Due to heavy winds and rain, trees were uprooted and underpasses were filled with knee deep water.  Under HAL police station limits, a huge compound wall collapsed. As a result, over half dozen vehicles were damaged.                        At Akshay Nagar and Duo Layout in Bommanhalli, many homes were flooded. The tank bund connected to Madivala lake breached on Thursday midnight and the water entered into homes. Fire and emergency personnel rushed to spot.MLA Satish Reddy along with city mayor Manjunath Reddy reached the spot and monitored the rescue operations. The mayor said that the situation worsened due to encroachment  “There is a huge culvert and it has been encroached. When BBMP went to clear the encroachment, the residents had got court stay. Now the area is flooded and those who had got court stay are also affected. We will clear encroachment and speed up the ongoing desilting work."                          The situation at Belakhalli was no different as over 1,000 houses were affected due to flooding. The water is over five feet deep in the area. The fire and emergency and disaster management personnel struggled hard to rescue those affected.
