BBMP seizes 2.5tonnes of plastic bags from Madiwala

Submitted by alvin on Tue, 2016-07-05 20:55 Bengaluru: The BBMP on Tuesday seized 2.5tonnes of plastic bags and penalised shopkeepers in Ward 172 and a few traders in the Madiwala market.Dr Manoranjan Hegde, Medical Officer, South Zone, BBMP, said, “We had already warned the traders and shop owners not to use plastic bags and had imposed fine on them. Depsite our several warnings, they were found using plastic of less than forty microns which is banned by government and BBMP.”Dr Manoranjan said they collected around 2.5 tonnes of plastic bags (2,500 kg) and also imposed Rs 2200 penalty on traders in Madiwala market and Rs 25,000 each on shop owners SLV, Mahaveer, and Ramdev traders in ward 172.“We have sent a letter to the Karnataka State Pollution Control Board to file a case against these three traders under Water Act 1974 (Prevention and Control of Pollution) and the Environment Protection Act 1986,” he said.Till date, the BBMP has seized 33872.8 kilograms and collected Rs 44,51,672 fine from all the eight zones of the city.
