The shopping bag you use instead of plastic bag is actually plastic

Submitted by alvin on Mon, 2016-07-04 17:43 Bengaluru: The ban on plastic bags in the city has resulted in the widespread use of bags made of a cloth-like material by shopkeepers and consumers which has got the BBMP and the state pollution control board worried.Though the material the bags made of resemble cloth, they are made of polypropelene, a sort of plastic and synthetic resin, which experts say is more dangerous than the plastic bag, taking about 300 years to decompose as the thickness is above 40 microns.In order to warn industries and traders producing such bags in the name of providing an alternative, the Karnataka State Pollution Control Board recently inspected 166 units across the state. They ordered closure of 37 plastic manufacturing units that produced banned plastic items and another 42 units were sent warning notices under Water Act 1974 (Prevention and Control of Pollution) and the Environment Protection Act 1986.Speaking to Bfirst, Lakshman, KSPCB Chairman, said, “Since a few industries argued about non-presence of plastic in these new bags, the board has sent samples for testing to Central Institute of Plastics Engineering
