Submitted by alvin on Wed, 2016-06-08 19:19 Mangaluru: In view of the monsoon, water sports operators along the Karnataka coast have been asked to shut down their operations for a few months. Besides, fishing boats and merchant vessels/dhows have been told to take precautions before venturing into the sea. KR Suresh, deputy inspector, commander, Coast Guard, Karnataka stressed for proper securing of cargo. Taking stock of the Coast Guard unit’s preparedness for the ensuing monsoon, Suresh asked the units to take frequent rounds of the ships, in a press release issued here. It said that the merchant vessels have been requested to participate in the search and rescue system and update their particulars. Besides, they have been asked to keep their automatic identification system on at all time. In case of emergency, they will have to contact the shipping agency or the Coast Guard. Old Port, Mangaluru will remain closed during monsoon till September 15 and dhows will not be allowed to enter sea. However, any dhows operating at sea should are requested to keep the owner and agents informed. Mechanised boats have been banned from fishing till July 31.
