Sowjanya murder: Suspects point fingers towards victim’s uncle, demand his interrogation

Sowjanya was brutally raped and murdered near Ujire in 2012

Mangaluru: The rape and murder of Sowjanya of Ujire has taken a new twist with the three suspects in the case pointed fingers towards the victim’s uncle Vittal Gowda, who is learnt to have seen her last and demanded that he be inquired to get the truth.

The three suspects – Uday Kumar, Malik Jain and Dhiraj Jain – were speaking to mediapersons here on Thursday. Dhiraj Jain alleged that Sowjanya’s uncle Vittal Gowda was involved in the rape and murder of Sowjanya. Vittal Gowda must be subjected to Narco analysis and FSL tests to get the truth.

He further alleged that, Vittal Gowda dropped Sowjanya home everyday. But on the ill-fated day, he refused to drop her home even though it was heavily raining. This raises suspicion on Gowda, he alleged.

The three suspects claimed that they have undergone all the necessary investigations that the authorities subjected them to. Yet there was nothing that could prove their role in the crime, they pointed out. “We are still ready for any kind of inquiry or action, if the authorities want to conduct in future,” said Dhiraj Jain.

Further, they completely denied the charges levelled against them by the victim’s parents.

“Our names were unnecessarily being dragged by the victim’s parents. Yet, we are ready for any probe, if Sowjanya’s parents demand,” they added.

They further said that they wish speedy justice to Sowjanya’s parents.

On the arrest of Santhosh Rao who is now named accused in the case, the trio alleged that “It was local residents who linked him to the case after catching him red-handed,” they alleged.

Meanwhile, Uday Jain who also spoke claimed that he was an autorickshaw driver and never met the other two suspects till his name was figured along with them as suspects. He further claimed that he had never met Sowjanya or her family.

Sowjanya, a 17-year-old pre-university student of SDM College, Ujjire in Dakshina Kannada, was raped and killed on her way back home from college on October 9, 2012.

The Belthangady police had arrested one Santosh Rao in connection with the case.

Earlier, the local people and the victim’s family alleged that four youth from Dharmasthala, including Nischal Jain, son of Harshendra Kumar, the younger brother of Veerendra Heggade, was involved in the case. Three others against whom allegations were levelled are Dheeraj Kella, Uday Jain and Mallik Jain.
