Bhaskar shetty murder: Relatives suspect collusion between police, accused

Submitted by alvin on Tue, 2016-08-09 17:41 Udupi: Relatives of Bhaskar Shetty and various Bunt associations have demanded a high level inquiry into the murder of the hotelier after the dramatic suicide attempt by astrologer Niranjan Bhat, who is one of the accused in the murder, late Monday night.According to reports, Niranjan Bhat swallowed a diamond ring in Manipal police custody. Later, the police rushed him to a hospital in Udupi. The doctor treating Niranjan said a scan revealed the presence of the diamond in the intestines. But the accused is said to be out of danger, he said. Following the suicide attempt, rumours have been swirling of collusion between local police and the accused. Local Bunt leaders are holding an emergency meeting at Ammanni Ramanna Shetty hall, Udupi on Tuesday evening to discuss the matter, said Jayakara Shetty, president of Udupi Taluk Bunt Association. One of the relative, who didn’t want to be named, said the accused astrologer had not swallowed the diamond ring to commit suicide but to create a scene. “How can he attempt suicide in the custody of police? Normally, before being lodged in the cell, the police detail every material in the possession of the accused. So how did the accused have diamond ring with him,” asked the relative.  Questions are also being raised in the lackadaisical way the police treated Gulabi Shetty’s complaint. Gulabi Shetty, who is the mother of murdered Bhaskar Shetty, had lodged a case with the Manipal police on the day her son went missing, but the police allegedly did not take the missing complaint seriously. Gulabi Shetty had mentioned the names of her daughter-in-law Rajeshwari Shetty and grandson Navaneeth Shetty, but the police allegedly asked her to remove their names from the complaint.Interestingly, Rajeshwari and son did not lodge any complaint and did not take Bhaskar Shetty’s disappearance seriously. According to sources, the local police allegedly had knowledge of the murder, but were reluctant to launch a probe. It was only after the media highlighted the incident that the police were forced to book a case of murder and begin investigating the matter seriously.
