Submitted by alvin on Sun, 2016-07-17 10:56 Mangaluru: Earlier jackfruit was food of the poor, but now it is part of a rich man's diet, said Vice-Chancellor of Mangalore University Prof K Byrappa while inaugurating the Halasu Mela 2016 at Pilikula Nisargadhama, Vamanjoor, on Saturday. Addressing the gathering, Prof Byrappa said, "Jackfruit is good for controlling blood sugar. It is also high in fiber. In our district, we make various delicacies from jackfruit such as jams, ice-creams, halwas, pappads, chips, cakes and other food items." He said the government should encourage jackfruit cultivation. “To support farmers, government should form a ‘jackfruit farmers’ board’," he said, adding that jackfruit trees did not need much looking after. Byrappa urged people to visit Pilikula and support the farmers by purchasing their products. As many as 35 to 40 varieties of jackfruits were exhibited at Halasu Mela.
