Free Ranga, send him back to forest: Activists to forest dept

Submitted by Rashmi on Thu, 2016-12-29 21:36 Bengaluru: Tusker 'Ranga', infamous for raiding crops, is still loved by people, who are now demanding his release.Ranga was captured following an operation of the forest department to capture marauding jumbos. The department is now planning to tame and use Ranga for Dasara procession, which is being opposed by some activists. “Elephant Ranga, who is in captivity at Bannerghatta Biological Park, should get one last chance and should be relocated into a new forest territory immediately. The forest department should stop the culture of capturing any wild animals,” said social activist Kumar Jahgirdhar. He pointed out that two elephants, which were captured along with Ranga, had been released in Bandipur tiger reserve, and that it was unfair to keep Ranga alone in captivity.Citing expert opinion, the activist said Ranga cannot be tamed for use in Dasara procession as he was aggressive by nature. Jagirdhar said use of Ranga for Dasara was unacceptable in the interest of animal rights and also in the spirit of the wildlife liberty. The activist also pointed out the Animal Welfare board’s direction, which states that in case of man-animal conflict the animal should be captured and transferred to a new forest reserve away from human settlement.Jahagirdhar will be staging a protest along with students of Shantiniketan school to create awareness among people regarding Ranga. The protestors have also created a facebook page : SAVERANGA facebook group
