The accused Ajith is the youngest son of the three children of Shivakumar, a welder by profession, and his first wife Shobha. According to the police, Shobha had immolated herself around seven months ago on learning about her husband’s affair with a woman named Chitra. Later, Shivakumar married Chitra soon after the death of his first wife and brought her home. Police said that trouble soon after Chitra entered the house. Enraged over the marriage, Ajith used to have frequent fights with Shivakumar and Chitra, holding the latter responsible for the death of his mother. Shivakumar also reportedly started neglecting his children and used to handover all his earnings to Chitra to run the family. Ajith is said to have nursed a grudge over this. Recently Ajith quarrelled with Shivakumar following which Chitra intervened and scolded him. Unable to take the humiliation, Ajith decided to eliminate Chitra, said the police. Around 11.30am on Tuesday, Ajith went to Chitra’s house and finding her alone stabbed her on the neck and fled the spot. Chitra, who was bleeding profusely, came out running on the street and raised an alarm. Neighbours rushed to her help and also alerted the police. Before collapsing, Chitra named Ajith as the culprit, said the police. Police who visited the spot rushed Chitra to a nearby hospital where she succumbed to her injuries. Ajith was later arrested by the police from a relative’s place. During interrogation, Ajith told the police that he wanted to get back at his father for cheating on his mother and marrying Chitra. Ajith was booked for murder and remanded in judicial custody.
