Submitted by Editor on Mon, 2017-01-30 19:51 Bengaluru: The CID forest cell in the state seized as many as 280 star tortoises from a smuggler on Saturday. The accused has been identified as Vijay. The seizure was made possible based on the tip-off provided by the South Zone Forest Cell in Chennai. CID officials said the accused belonged to Akki Pikki tribal community. The accused reportedly received the consignment from Andhra Pradesh via Hindupur and dropped anchor at Siddlaghatta on Bengaluru outskirts. The CID official said star tortoise had great demand in places such as Singapore. “The accused operating for kingpins sitting in Chennai might have been planning to smuggle the tortoises through Bengaluru Airport or via Chennai harbour," said the official. Following the arrest, a case was registered at Dibburhalli Police Station and the accused remanded in judicial custody.
