The police have also arrested others involved in the crime. The officer is identified as Babu Naronha, who is in police custody now. It may be recalled here that a businessman Satish, who was looking to exchange Rs 80 lakh in old currency was approached by one Kartik, who agreed to do it for 20 per cent commission. Kartik along with six others went to Satish's residence in JP Nagar on a scheduled time and took Rs 80 lakh in Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 denominations to exchange them. However, the gang apparently told Satish that they were from CCB and this was their plan to trap them. Before Satish could realise what was happening, the gang escaped with the cash. He had lodged a complaint with the JP Nagar police and based on his complaint, the police have detained retired DySP Babu Naronha. Prima facie, his involvement in the robbery is apparent and he is being questioned by the police, said sources. In fact, Babu Naronha has a dark history. He killed KGF rowdy sheeter Sagayam alias Sagai in 2003 in an encounter, soon after two of his brothers too were killed in separate encounters in KGF. This meritorious service earned him the President’s Gallantry medal. However, there were allegations that it was a fake encounter. Following which the high court directed that the three cases be investigated by CBI in 2008. The CBI concluded that they were indeed fake encounters. As a result, his gallantry medal was taken back by the government later.
