Submitted by alvin on Fri, 2016-11-11 14:09 I left the choice to Michael showing that we were not interested in her. Michael agreed her to join. She took a shawl covered it herself and stepped out of the resort. 'Two birds with one stone really fine'. I said to myself. We all went towards the lodge. Jagadish Rao was there in the lodge waiting for us. He was astonished to see the most wanted con couple in our company walking easily with us. Our family was in the adjacent room. We got into the hotel room. I asked the couple to sit for a while and ordered for tea. They were in no mood to drink tea. It was evident that they just wanted money. It was God-sent opportunity. I said to Mulla in Kannada that we will now disclose our identities to the couple and arrest them without any loss of time. He readily agreed. Then I got up from my chair. I was just sitting next to the entrance to the room. There were two wooden cots in the room. I suddenly pulled out one of the cot in a flash across the entrance in order to block their way to escape. I then took out my service pistol pointing it towards him and said “Michael, I am very sorry to say we are really cops, your doubts are true. Now, just listen to what I say, don’t try to act smart. You are under arrest. Just co operate with us, we will take both of you to Bangalore." Michael was stunned and shocked. But he very well understood his precarious condition. He looked at me with fixed eyes. He did nothing to act smart, started sweating profusely. Michael was grim faced, while Ulrike was in tears. There was total silence in the room for some time. A little latter he regained his calm and said. “Sir, tell me what will I pay you both to set us free? I am expecting big money from Germany in a day or two. Right now I am penniless. ” Michael, I said “You are our prize catch, we will be eating s**t if we take money from a criminal like you and let go”. I asked him co-operate for investigation. He agreed and said he has a request to make. I agreed. Michael said “Sir, can I have a drink please. I’m nervous and tensed.” I strictly denied. He begged again and again. I looked at Mulla who is a teetotaler. He said “I think we can offer him a peg or two. Not more than that.” Hesitatingly Ulrike requested “Sir can I also have a drink?” We reluctantly agreed and procured some brandy which was the only drink available at that point of time and offered to both of them. Not satisfied with the quantity they asked for more. We refused to budge. As there was no space in the car for all of us to travel together we put our family in the bus bound for Bangalore and dispatched them. I had only one hand cuff with me. Hence, I hand cuffed Michael’s right hand with Ulrike’s left hand with the single handcuff. We settled the bills at the Hotel and checked out. I made Michael, Ulrike and Jagadish to sit at the rear seat of our little car. I was behind the wheels and Mulla sat next to me. We left Velankani at 5.30 pm and travelled the whole night stopping for sipping a cup of tea in between. When we were half way through Michael wanted to attend nature’s call. I parked my car next to the kerb on the left hand side on the Highway. It was around 2 am in the night. There was total darkness all around. I was a bit skeptical about allowing Michael to get down from the car in the total darkness. I asked constable Jagadish to take care of him and let him attend the nature’s call. I then realized that Michael and Ulrike were handcuffed together and therefore any chance of Michael escaping was very less. But Michael was insisting that the handcuff is removed. I refused. Mulla was sympathetic to him and suggested to me that he can be freed for a while. I did not heed to his words. I refused Michael to have his way and asked to walk together with Ulrike and ease himself and return. Both of them cursed me a lot saying I was very inhuman. But I only knew how risky it was to let Michael off the hook even if it was just for a while. The next day around 5 am we reached the outskirts of Bangalore. We stopped for a while at Madiwala Police station to inform our ACP CM Iqbal about our accomplished mission. He was too ecstatic and asked us to go over to his official quarters directly. On reaching his quarters at Vasanthnagar Iqbal came out with open arms and embraced us and as if in sheer excitement screamed “ Bastards you have done it.” Police Commissioner AR Sreedharan held a huge press conference. We became the darlings for the media who hailed us “The heroes of Bangalore City Police.” But the best compliment was yet to come from the crook Michael himself. He said to the press “I have seen cops in many countries, but not the ones like these guys.” It was more than a President’s medal for us. Our sincere efforts did really pay rich dividends. Concluded.
