Tracing Con Couple: Finally, Lady Luck smiled at us in a slum!

Submitted by alvin on Thu, 2016-10-13 17:42 We asked the manager whether the couple had given any contact number or address. His reply was "no". I knew that they were very clever and wouldn't leave any clue so easily.PC Alexander was the Governor of Tamil Nadu those days. He was visiting Velankanni that day and there was heavy police bandobust in the little pilgrim centre. We had learnt about PC Alexander as one of the toughest civil servants those days. We just wanted to see him just out of sheer curiosity. The convoy of vehicles escorting PC Alexander was arriving towards the church and we were standing among the waiting crowd. Policemen in plain clothes were found here and there. A couple of them were on duty next to us. One of them went past suspiciously looking at me.It was said PC Alexander was facing threat from the LTTE ranks hence there was heavy police presence in the town that day. As an investigating officer, I always carried my revolver with me wherever I went on investigation. Even when I went after the ‘Con Couple’, I had carried my pistol with me. I had tucked it under the waist of my Jeans trousers and wore a T-shirt to conceal it.The policeman who brushed past me felt the weapon I was concealing it, on more than one occasion. I do not really know as to why he didn't check me. But, now, I shudder to think when I remember that incident. Had he searched me, it would have been a very difficult situation for me. However, nothing of that sort happened. In the meantime, we discussed that one of us will go to the German Consulate in Chennai to find out some concrete details about the whereabouts of the couple.Accordingly, I left for Chennai. At Chennai, I went straight to the office of the German Consulate situated at Egmore. I went to Mrs Fox, the Consulate General and briefed her the entire story. Mrs Fox was in her late forties. She gave me a patient hearing. She offered me a glass of home-made wine but at the end declined to give any information to me stating that she was not supposed divulge any information about her nationals. She said that I could approach the CBI or the Interpol for assistance. I left her place once again disgusted.I joined my friend Mulla back at Velankanni and pursued our investigation. But there was something to look forward to. Jagadish Rao brought a news to us that there are two more Josephine behind A-1 lodging at Velankanni. It was late in the evening when the information came to us. So, we thought to go after it in the morning. The next morning, we commenced our work very early in the morning and went towards A-1 Lodge and made enquiries about Josephine. It was a cold winter day.Next day, as we were walking behind A-1 Lodge, we saw a local man shabbily dressed, covering his body with a torn rug and smoking a beedi. May be because the climate was very chill.I stopped and asked him, did he know any Josephine who was a cook. He said that he knew two Josephines living in the neighbourhood a little away from the A-1 Loge. I asked him to show them to me. Five minutes’ walk from where I met him we found ourselves in a place which looked like a slum. He said both the Josephines were living there in the slum in separate huts. I was wondering whether it was possible that the couple could stay in such a place. As I was lost in my thoughts, the man who was escorting us stopped in front of a thatched hut and loudly yelled out "Josephine", "Josephine". There was no response from the hut. He went inside the hut and returned saying no one was found there. Then he went a few meters away and stopped at another hut and called out again loudly "Josephine", "Josephine".This time a lanky lady in her early thirties emerged out of the hut. I asked her whether any foreigner had come to meet her recently. Looking suspiciously at me, she asked who we were and why do we want to know about any foreigner. I had it in my mind that the couple were short of money and thought I would tell her that I have brought some money for them.I told her what I had thought. My trick worked. She immediately said "Yes I know they are in lot of financial problem, even they have borrowed money from me, and they owe me more than a thousand rupees.” To be continued…
