Gangaiah Shetty was performing at the 'Kateelu Kshetra Mahatme' organised at Durganagar in Ekkur on Wednesday night. During the act, he suddenly collapsed on the stage and died while being shifted to KMC Hospital. Gangaiah Shetty's performance as 'Mahishasura' in Devi Mahatme had brought him immense popularity among the audience. However, after he suffered a heartattack 15 years ago, doctors had strictly advised him from enacting that role. Since then, he had been taking up lighter roles, yet made them memorable. He was the son of Ammu Shetty and Kamala Shetty of Gerukatte in Belthangady taluk. He became Yakshagana aritste at 16 years and has been a part of Kateelu Yakshagana Mela for the past 45 years.
