According to the police, the incident happened when Charan, a resident of Capitanio, was returning in an auto along with his wife and child after meeting his mother in Moodushedde. Four persons in a SUV allegedly waylaid their auto near a petrol bunk. The gang dragged the family out following which they assaulted Charan and fled the spot, said the police. After the assault, the auto driver took Charan to a private hospital. The driver also identified three of the attackers as Imran, Rizwan and Saifuddin. Police commissioner Chandra Sekhar, who visited the hospital, said the murderous attack on Charan had taken place between 1 and 1.30 pm. “Some assailants came in a Bolero and attacked him. We cannot ascertain the number of assailants right now. We have formed three teams to trace the culprits. We have definite clues but we cannot reveal details." Chandra Sekhar said the attack could be due to past rivalry. Charan had been arrested by the Kavoor police in 2014. The VHP and Bajrang Dal had alleged that Charan, a right-wing activist, was tortured in custody and had demanded the suspension of the then SI Umesh Kumar. Umesh was suspended but was reinstated in less than a month.
