Highly placed sources said Shetty’s wife Rajeshwari and another suspect Niranjan Bhat have cleaned up the ‘yaaga shala’ after the crime was committed. It may be recalled here that hotelier Shetty was allegedly murdered and burnt to death at homa kunda near Nandalike. The suspects are alleged to have disposed of the ashes and other remains including Shetty’s mobile phone and a pepper spray in river in order to destroy the evidence. The police are now heavily banking on call records of the accused and victim to get a breakthrough. During the investigation, it emerged that Niranjan Bhat’s call records showed his connections with a powerful politician and an influential, self-styled godman. It is learnt that the investigators have decided to verify the call records of Manipal Inspector Girish and other policemen, who were accused of being biased in favour of the suspects. There have been accusations that Girish deliberately neglected the missing complaint filed by victim’s mother Gulabi Shetty, thus giving room for the accused to destroy the evidence. Also, while taking the accused to the court, inspector Girish had allowed accused Navneet Shetty to sit in the front seat of the vehicle, while and he sat in the seat being the driver. Besides, the three suspects were taken to a a hotel at Nitte, apparently to allow them to rest. This clearly establishes ‘police-suspect’ nexus theory, investigating officers feel. Following complaints by the general public and pressure from the Bunt community, District In-charge minister Pramod Madhwaraj had sought the investigation officer to be changed. The case is now being probed by Additional SP Sumana of Karkala division.
