Ilaiyaraja’s legal notice to SPB shocks fans
The notice prevents the singer from performing Ilaiyaraja’s compositions without his permission
Chennai: Noted music composer Ilaiyaraja’s legal notice to his long-term associate SP Balasubramanyam – endearingly called as SPB – asking him not to perform any of his compositions – without his permission – has upset music lovers. Fans of SPB have taken to the social media to express their feelings for the six-time National Award singer.
They wondered when a producer of the movie holds the rights of the songs of a movie, how could Ilaiyaraja alone claim the right over the songs, he has composed. What about lyricists, they asked.
SPB who broke the news on his social media platform wrote that "Organisers of the concerts in different cities and the managements of all the venues are not supposed to perform compositions of Shri Ilaiyaraja without his permission, if so, it is breaking the copyright law and face legal action. Let me say, I am ignorant of these legalities."
SPB has requested the media and fans not to make the issue sensational. "It is unfortunate. That's all. Show has to go on, life has to move on. In god's creation all are good and equal."
Presently, SPB along with singer Chitra and his son Charan is on world tour titled SPB50 to mark his 50th year in

How can a composer claim royalty.. He did music for a producer. Lyricist and singers have their stake too.
