"As per Campco’s study, 122,000 metric tons (MT) of areca nut is grown in Hunan province of China every year but this doesn't meet the demand of companies producing mouth freshening products. Due to the shortage, manufacturers have turned towards India for a sufficient supply of areca," he said. A Chinese company Kou Wei Wang (King of Taste) Company manufacturing mouth freshener has signed an MoU with CAMPCO to process and export 2MTs of tender areca nut on a trial basis, said Padmanabha, adding that the company had agreed to depute experts to CAMPCO in July to train staff to process products as per their requirement. Padmanaba also said that areca nut farmers had come forward to supply arecanut meeting the Chinese standard and also make a concrete plan on exporting the same to China. “Progressive farmers have to plan for visiting China to study systems of processing and converting the areca nut into valued added products. Cooperatives all over Karnataka also have to make a decisive plan on sending progressive farmers to China to study areca nut processing," he said.
