In a rare gesture as a wedding gift to his daughter, a Muslim father in Hagaribommanahalli, Ballari district, arranged the mass marriages of 11 Hindu couples from various communities.
S Inayath, headmaster at the Government Higher Primary school in Narayanadevarakere village in Hagaribommanahalli could have done his daughter S Nagma's wedding that resonates in the community, a lavish ceremony in every sense. But Nagma wanted to wed in a mass marriage. Not just that she wanted her father to hold mass marriage of Hindu couples as a wedding gift.
"How could I say no to my daughter when she spelt out about the wedding gift? I have done my duty as a loving father," Inayath said, according to a report in Prajavani. Nagma, an engineering graduate was married to SKS Rasool.
The school headmaster has incurred expenses of Rs 5 lakh. Over three thousand attended the weddingwho were treated to a sumptuous meal.
Three couple from Schedule Caste, two couple from Scheduled Tribe and six couples from other communities entered the wedlock.
The wedding was attended by Janavadi Mahila Sanghatan State unit chairperson K Neela, Veerashaiva Lingayat Panchamsali Mutt's Mahantha Swamiji, Maheshwara Swamji of Nandipura, Halashankara Swamiji, priest Vijaykumar, Moulana Dada Saheb, Block Education officer Shekharappa Horapeti and Resource Officer Boraiah.
"Instead of splurging money on grand reception, I had asked my father to hold mass marriage of eleven couple from the poor background. This is the best gift I could ever receive," Nagma told reporters.
