CEO of Janashri news channel held on extortion charges

The CEO of Janashri news channel, Laxmiprasad Vajapai, was arrested by the city police for demanding Rs10-cr from a businessman.
According to the Koramangala police, Vajapai, 42, had threatened to telecast incriminating content if his demands were not met.
Police raided the premises of Janashri channel when the complainant had handed over the first instalment. The amount was seized and the accused Vajapai and an individual identified as Mithun, who received the money, were arrested.
Police said Vajapai had a history of threatening and blackmailing. One case is registered against Laxmiprasad Vajapai and his associates at Commercial Street Police Station for trying to extort ₹10 cr and jewellery worth ₹30 lakhs from a businessman.
Vajapai allegedly received ₹ 10 cr through a bank transaction in the name of various entities. According to the complaint, the Vajapai had demanded ₹ 15 cr.
Another extortion case against Laxmiprasad Vajapai has been filed at Mahalaxmipuram Police Station.
The modus operandi of Laxmiprasad Vajapai was simple. He would air some negative content about a businessman. Later, he would contact the same person and threaten to air more negative content following which he would demand money.
Boralingaiah, DCP (South-East division) is probing the accused's antecedents and possible involvement in other cases.
