A photograph uploaded on social media apps including Whats App and Facebook by an unknown user few days ago and instantly shared by thousands of people including former law minister S Suresh Kumar shook the education department out of their wits. The picture depicts the miserable conditions under which a government lower primary school is run in Kattehole village, Hiriyur takuk, Chitradurga district. What astounded thousands of netizens is that a hut with thatched roof is the government school and kids are studying there! This photo went viral on social media and former law minister S Suresh Kumar among thousands of other netizens were freaked out. Suresh Kumar went a step ahead brought the issue to the notice of the Primary and Secondary Education Minister Kimmane Rathnakar. However, the whole exercise turned out to be a damp squib. When the word spread, a visibly taken aback local officials of the education department had a different story to tell. They had to do a time travel! D Hanumantharaya, Block Education Officer (BEO), Hiriyur informed that the photo which is in circulation was tracked to the year 2006-07. “The state government had announced a primary school for Kattehole in the year 2006-07. This area was surrounded by a thick forest for more than 5 kilometers of radius. The school was sanctioned to ensure that the children of around 40 families living in this area get education. To begin with, the school was started in a temporary structure. But in the year 2007-08, government sanctioned Rs 4.5 Lakh for the school building. But when we started the building works forest department raised objection. They even issued us a notice,” he said. “Following this, education department dropped the building works. But a strong structure has been built to ensure that students will not face any problem. Even the toilet facilities are also provided with all the amenities. This photo in circulation is outdated,” he explained. Moral of the Story: Verify facts before sharing or you will end up making mamu out of yourselves like it happened to the former minister.
