'Time bomb' defused

Submitted by Editor on Wed, 2016-03-02 20:13 Bengaluru: Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Wednesday declared his Hublot Big Bang- 301-M wristwatch, the focus of all attention in recent days, as a government asset by handing over the watch to assembly speaker Kagodu Thimmappa. Siddaramaiah's watch had come under the scanner after HD Kumaraswamy had raised the issue of CM wearing watch worth Rs70 lakh while claiming to be a common man.  This had created a ruckus in the state assembly as opposition had questioned Siddaramaiah's reluctance to declare the watch.     On Wednesday, when all parties demanded an answer, Siddaramaiah handed over the wristwatch to assembly speaker Kagodu Timmappa announcing that the watch was a state asset.   Siddaramaiah in his letter also mentioned that the watch belonged to his friend Dr Girish Chandra Varma and it had been gifted to him in July 2015. Dr Girish Chandra Varma, an NRI based in Dubai, has no official dealings with the Government of Karnataka. Being a law abiding citizen, the CM said he had paid the advance tax on the gift on Mar 2 2016.
