Dr Varma on Tuesday, claimed that he, in fact, coaxed Siddaramaiah to accept the diamond-studded Hublot watch.Calling the whole matter a “petty affair”, Dr Varma said the cost of the watch was Rs 14 lakh only. “I had paid 75,000 DHS in Dubai market price (Rs 14 lakh -Indian) not Rs 70 lakh as Opposition party claims.” He further said that he has a good collection of high-end watches and had gifted one of them to Siddaramaiah. He denied that there was any hidden agenda in gifting the watch to the chief minister.  Dr Varma, who hails from Thiruvananthapuram has made Dubai his home after completing his studies in Davangere and Mangaluru. Presently, he works with NMC Hospital, Dubai. He said that he does not hold any property or business in Karnataka.Dr Varma met Siddaramaiah through a common friend in Mysuru in 1983. During his visit to Bengaluru in last July, he met the chief minister and gifted the wrist watch to Siddaramaiah.“I never knew this watch would create such a ruckus in the political circles. This has upset me. Opposition parties are wasting their time over debating such silly issues. Being a humble man, Siddaramaiah had denied to accept the watch when I offered him. But I forced him to accept it,” said Dr Varma. Stating that he wants to put an end to the whole issue, Dr Varma said “It was just a gift to the chief minister and it would be appropriate if political leaders stopped blowing the whole issue out of proportion.”
