Roll back fees hike, demand IIT Guwahati students

Submitted by alvin on Thu, 2016-04-07 20:09 New Delhi: Students of the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Guwahati, on Thursday demanded the government to roll back the fees hike for the next academic session from Rs. 90,000 to Rs. two lakh. "My father's monthly income is around Rs. 50,000 and he is the only member of the family who earns and has responsibility of four members of the family.My father starts saving from four months before the semester to pay it," said Retinder Singh Bansal, a student. "Already the fee is high and now doubling it will impact the entire family," added another student Tapas while demanding the government to roll back the decision or provide some relief. The Ministry of Human Resources Development has issued order to hike admission fees of the prestigious Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) was today raised from Rs. 90,000 to Rs. two lakh for the next academic session. However, the government has waived off the fee of the SCs, STs, disabled students and students belonging to families with annual income below Rs. one lakh. But the move to hike fee for more than double has hit the rib of the student belongs to middle class families. The decision was taken after an IIT panel last week approved a proposal for a three-fold hike in annual fees of the institute. The committee had also emphasised that every student should be provided educational loans at an interest-free basis and without collateral. (ANI)
