Submitted by alvin on Mon, 2016-04-04 20:31 Assam: The Election Commission on Monday said that the first phase of Assembly Elections across 65 constituencies of Assam were peaceful, adding that there were no reports of any violence or injury during the polls.Deputy Election Commissioner Sandeep Saxena said that poll percentage till 5 p.m. in Assam was around 70 �nd lauded the security personnel for ensuring that no untoward incident took place."Today the phase one of Assam legislative assembly elections were conducted in 65 constituencies. The polling hour was from 7 am to 5 pm. Assam has many shadow areas and we are compiling the information, the election has by and large been peaceful. It was totally free from violence and there are no reports of any injury or death across 65 constituencies," he said."Barring some minor incidents, like some EVMs not working, which were replaced immediately, and very minor incidents, the polls were peaceful," he added.He said that the EC had identified vulnerable areas in the state, which were visited by their teams to ensure that elections progressed smoothly."There was a very good deployment of quick response teams, which were immediately rushed to problem areas. They were also asked to visit the vulnerable hamlets, vulnerable locations and interact with vulnerable people. We had made a list of vulnerable people, and as a confidence building measure those people were contacted by out CAPF mobile force," he added.Polling for the first of the two-phase Assam assembly elections was held today amidst strict security arrangements. A total of 539 candidates, including 43 women, were in the fray.More than 95 lakh voters were to decide the fate of incumbent Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi and BJP Chief Ministerial candidate Sarbananda Sonowal.
