Namchi to become Eco friendly city

Pawan Chamling inaugurated the three day long “Namchi Mahotsav” organized by Namchi Mahotsav Organizing Committee under the guidance of South Sikkim Tourism Development Society (SSTDS), South District Administration and Sikkim Tourism Development Corporation at Central Park, Namchi today. Present during the inaugural were SLA Speaker cum Chief Patron of Namchi Mahotsav Mr. K.N. Rai, Cabinet Ministers, Chairman’s, Advisors, tour operators from differs parts of the country, officials from various departments and the general public. The Chief Minister after inaugurating the festival, along with the dignitaries visited the various stalls. He launched the Namchi Smart City Project along with South Sikkim “The Ultimate Tourist Destination” magazine. Addressing the gathering the Chief Minister Mr. Pawan Chamling extended his gratitude to the organizing committee of Namchi Mahotsav which is being celebrated after a gap of five years. The Chief Minister spoke about the significance of Mahotsav and informed that such kind of festival should be celebrated consistently in order to preserve our tradition and culture. Speaking about the South district headquarter Namchi being named as one of the towns selected for urban development as smart city Mr. Chamling spoke about how Namchi has been transformed towards development under the state government. The Chief Minister informed that Namchi has been selected under the smart city project as the town fulfills the criteria to be featured under smart city. Mr. Chamling stated that the first phase work will commence soon by the state government after the sanction of funds by the central government. Mr. Chamling further appealed the public of Namchi to extend their co-operation and to work collectively alongside the government department to further support in developing Namchi as one of the model smart cities. The Chief Minister announced to promote Namchi under the smart city project as a completely eco-friendly town not only in the state but also in the country. For the same the Chief Minister urged the public of Namchi to show their support towards the government by adopting eco-friendly outlook, lifestyle and habits. Additionally Mr. Chamling updated that the smart city project will benefit and assist Namchi in various ways to become a developed and economically prosperous town in the state. Speaking on the Namchi bazaar beautification scheme, the chief minister updated that the 2nd phase has been initiated by the state government and here too the Chief Minister called upon the public for their pro-active participation and responsibility in successfull completion of the beautification process. Shifting focus on tourism sector the Chief Minister informed that the objective of the government is to create tourism industry as one of the number one industries in the state. Likewise Mr. Chamling emphasized on the participation of the Sikkimese youth in realizing this objective of the state government by adopting tourism sector as a profession in their lives and in addition playing a vital role in giving immense boost to the tourism industry. Mr. Chamling also urged the newly elected councilors in the state to construct an open amphitheatre whereby various kinds of cultural and traditional programs can be conducted for the attraction of the tourist visiting the district. Mr. Chamling updated that the Prime Minister Mr. Narendra Modi will be visiting the state in the month of January 2016 and the PM would declare Sikkim as a fully organic state. Further the chief minister urged the public to extend their co-operation in making Sikkim the leader in Organic Farming in the domestic as well as international arena. During the program the Chief Minister was felicitated by the Namchi Mahotsav Organizing Committee for his contribution and support in the holistic development of the state.
