Street Vendors Demand Rs.100 Crore in BBMP Budget Allocation

Submitted by Newseditor on Tue, 2015-12-01 12:46 Bengaluru: Demanding Rs 100 Crore allocation for street vendors in Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike's (BBMP) annual budget, Federation of BBMP Street Hawkers Association, West Zone staged a protest in front of BBMP office here on Tuesday. Holding the banners and shouting the slogans, the protesters including several women asserted their demand was just 1 percent of the total consideration from BBMP administrators.  Speaking to Bfirst.in, C E Ravikumar, Secretary, BBMP Street Hawkers Association (West Zone) said that, as tax payers to BBMP, the street vendors deserve a considerable allocation in annual budget. “According to a resolution endorsed in 2014 Act, the BBMP is authorised to allot 1 percent of the total budget for the street vendors. Every year BBMP allots about Rs 10,000 Crore for various purposes in its annual budget. Hence the authorities should provide Rs 100 Crore for the street vendors,” he added. Lashing out at BBMP for its lackadaisical attitude towards street vendors, Ravikumar remarked, “In Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh the authorities are keen enough to ensure basic facilities like vehicles and toilets for the vendors. Unfortunately the BBMP has been ignoring street vendors for all these years,” he said. Meanwhile, the office bearers of the Federation have also accused Bangalore City Police of being antagonistic towards street vendors.
