Submitted by Newseditor on Mon, 2015-11-30 17:24 Bengaluru: Arising out of need to celebrate and platform many deserving names – attendance, the yearbook of Indian dance, now in its 18th year, edited-published by art historian and scholar, Ashish Mohan Khokar and Elisabeth Khokar, has instituted these awards, in collaboration with the Alliance Française. According to Ashish Khokar, as part of Khokar Dance Foundation’s many activities to celebrate and platform deserving artistes, it bestows 5 awards annually named after legendary dance figures. The awards have a very clear criteria that include that they must go to someone who have not received many national honours till date, who deserves and values it much.“An awardee must have 20 years of solid and sincere body of work behind and potential for atleast 20 more years (so the median age is 40-60) and the awardee must serve the mission of legend after whom the award is named and given. Awardees do not receive customary shining shawls or cash prizes but internship with a professional dance company, organisation or group abroad and career linkages at home, to take their art forward. The Jury is kept secret so no one can canvass. The awards are in its 5th year now and one outcome is that those who have received in past, soon get a national award, so much is its efficacy and credibility”, said Ashish Khokar. This is the concluding event of the year 2015 under the popular Dance Discourse series of Dance History Society – Alliance Française with Ashish Mohan Khokar. The series is academic in nature, with past of dance shown through archival films; the present through live performances and the future, through Q n A with the audience. Not only it has won new audiences for dance, these initiatives have also synergised the dance and art fraternity.  The event is scheduled on December 5, 2015 at 6 pm at Alliance Française de Vasanthnagar and will honour The Ram Gopal best male soloist award to Sheejith Krishna (Chennai), the Mohan Khokar award for dance documentation to Dr Gowri Ramnarayan (Chennai), the Uday Shankar Choreography award to Mayuri Madhuri Upadhya of Nritarutya (Bengaluru), the Rukmini Devi Arundale award for significant contribution to Bharatanatyam to Guru Padmini Ravi (Bengaluru), and Maya Rao lifetime acheivement award for having served dance for a lifetime to Guru Radha Shridhar.
