Bengaluru District In charge minister KJ George, on Wednesday, announced an immediate grant of Rs 20 crore towards cleaning up of the lake. As a temporary measure, the funds will be utilised for deweeding and construction of slopes to check the raising froth in the lake. Minister George said the lake water need to be drained out to make a passage and clear the silt. This would give a permanent solution to check pollution of the lake. However, there is some difference of opinion among a few lake activists over this, as they feel that water cannot be drained out from the lake completely. Besides, such a move would leave other lakes – in the city – polluted. Frothing Bellandur lake has been making headlines all over. Untreated and unregulated sewage water that enter the lake has polluted it beyond repair. Besides, industrial waste that enters the lake has also damaged it. To further worsen the case, treatment plants are not at all effective. Environmentalist Yellappa Reddy appealed to expedite the cleaning work and also develop 49 other lakes that connect to Bellandur lake. Sridhar Pabisetty, CEO, Namma Bengaluru Foundation and experts submitted a memorandum on action plan to minister.
