Fuel for ire: Exhaust up, mileage down. Who's to blame?

Submitted by alvin on Wed, 2016-03-09 09:48 Bengaluru: If your vehicle is giving less mileage or emitting more smoke, then the fault may not be with your vehicle but with oil outlets.Oil outlets belonging to state-run oil firms in Karnataka are notorious for under measurement and adulteration yet their misdeeds have gone unpunished. For example, during the last three years, there have been four cases of under measurement against BPCL, while HPCL and IOC have 19 and 57 cases of under measurement registered against them respectively. Yet, not a single outlet's licence in the state has been terminated on account of the irregularities. Recently, the issue even surfaced even in the Parliament when Rajya Sabha member Avinash Rai Khanna from Punjab raised the issue. According to the information furnished by the Minister of State for Petroleum and Natural Gas Dharmendra Pradhan, under measurement and adulteration cases are rampant in Karnataka.Pradhan informed that during the last three years, a total of 82 cases of under measurement and adulteration cases were unearthed in the state. Highest cases of under measurement and adulteration were reported from oil outlets owned by Indian Oil Corporation (IOC) followed by HPCL.No action In spite of these findings, none of these oil majors have suspended even a single outlet for cheating the general public. Speaking to this newspaper, an officer from a state-owned oil firm said the need of the hour was strict implementation of various Acts and criminal proceedings against the owners of the erring oil outlets. “General public must raise their voice or else guilty will not be punished,” he said. Detail of irregularities during the last three years and current year in KarnatakaCompany: BPCLUnder-Measurement: 4Adulteration: 1Company: HPCLUnder-Measurement: 19Adulteration: 0Company: IOCLUnder-Measurement: 57Adulteration: 1Outlets terminated on account of irregularitiesBPCL: 0HPCL: 0IOCL: 0
