Petty shops on KR Puram main road turn BBMP meeting into petty battle

Submitted by Editor on Tue, 2016-03-01 01:23 Bengaluru: The Council Meeting of Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) on Monday witnessed heated exchanges Monday between Council Member of KR Puram Ward, K Poornima, MLA of KR Puram BA Basavaraju, and the BBMP Mayor over the issue of allowing petty shops on pavements. The trigger for verbal duel was the issue of allowing petty shops on the footpath on the main road of KR Puram in Poornima’s ward.Poornima accused the mayor and commissioner of sitting over the issue. “I had brought the issue of petty shops constructed with the support of the local MLA earlier. And the Mayor and Commissioner had assured that they will visit the ward and inspect it. But still no action has been taken by both,” said Poornima. While the Poornima was addressing the Mayor, Basavaraju intervened and said, “That road comes in my constituency. I know about it very well. The petty shops which have been constructed belong to ITI (Central Government). BBMP has nothing to do with it. Also, the petty shops do not belong to the BBMP. Also the pedestrians have no problem with it,” he added.Responding to the claims of Basavaraju, Poornima said, “The commissioner has already issued the notice to the Joint Commssioner of the area to clear the footpath. When they have issued the notice, how can this property come under the ITI? Didn’t the commissioner verify the property documents? I know it pretty well. It belongs to BBMP only. When the BBMP has constructed the footpath, the BBMP has the responsibility to take care of it.”With Poornima refusing to relent, the mayor assured the corporator of action. As the war of words between the corporator and the MLA escalated, the mayor, in what seemed to be offensive and inappropriate language, told the female corporator, “You have already changed your party from Congress to BJP. During your last tenure, the BJP MLAs were against you. Also you have not maintained good relationship with MLAs. You should not talk like this. You are bringing your personal vendetta here.”As finger were pointed by both parties, other female council members of the BJP rushed into the well of the council. But the Mayor called off the meeting and exited from the council hall.Speaking to Bfirst, Poornima said, “The mayor’s behaviour has disappointed me very much. There is nothing wrong in what i have demanded. During the meeting Mayor only claimed that the BBMP was accountable for all the lands in BBMP limits. Now he is going back on his own words. I understand he might have to bow down before his MLAs, but he has to be mature enough to know how to talk to female corporators.”
