Resident uploads video of garbage burning on FB; corporator calls it conspiracy

Submitted by Subeditor on Wed, 2016-02-17 12:53 Bengaluru: An American national living in HSR Layout, who filmed BBMP staff burning garbage in the vicinity of his house and later posted the video on his Facebook page, earned the ire of the corporator of the HSR Layout, who claimed that his “rivals were using foreign nationals to tarnish his image”!After noticing incidents of garbage burning in the locality, Lex Maxwell, an American residing in HSR Layout and working with an adventure sports company, filmed and uploaded two videos of garbage burning in HSR Layout Sector 2 on Facebook.Lex’s Facebook post also mentions the number of the vehicle involved in the garbage burning. On his FB post, Lex wrote, “Hopefully these specific people (license plate number KA 03 B 2453) are reprimanded for improper execution of their jobs, and their peers take note. However, without garbage separation at the household level, enforced from all sides, there is no solution to this problem”.Later, when Bfirst contacted corporator Gurumurthy Reddy for his take on the videos, the corporator emphatically denied that garbage was being burnt in his ward. “My Ward is plastic-free. I am scrutinising everything. Also no garbage burning is taking place in my ward. Using Facebook, rival parties are using foreign nationals to upload false and fake footages to tarnish my image,” said the corporator. When Bfirst raised the issue with Mayor of BBMP BN Manjunath Reddy, the mayor termed the matter of garbage burning a “serious” issue. The mayor, mercifully, also refused to back the corporator’s remarks. “I will not support the remarks of HSR Layout Corporator Gurumurthy Reddy who is saying that rival parties are burning garbage to tarnish his image. There should some sense when an individual is defending oneself. How can any a rival party burn garbage to tarnish his image? I will look into this issue immediately. I will also check the video footage posted by foreign national,” said the mayor.Speaking to Bfirst, Lokesh, Executive Engineer, Solid Waste Management Division of the BBMP, said garbage burning posed a grave threat to people’s health. “Burning of garbage releases carbon dioxide, and if any person is burning plastic items then a toxic chemical known as 'Dioxin Furan' is released into the air,” said Lokesh.Lex Maxwell’s FB post also received many reactions from netizens of Bengaluru.   garbage disposal in HSR layoutGarbage is burned here almost every day (even more frequently after my room mate started complaining about the garbage dump), every other day the garbage is burned by the garbage disposal workers themselves as part of their garbage pickup route. Today I finally caught them on video (for Abhinav Garg). Please share it to appropriate groups and authorities. Garbage separation is the only solution. Expecting someone else to separate and recycle your garbage for you is a joke and an excuse of the lazy and willfully ignorant. This is what happens to unseparated garbage.People sometimes ask if I dispose of the garbage "properly" when I do a garbage cleanup. In this video you can see what happens to most of the garbage I dispose of "properly" in HSR layout. Frankly, when I do a garbage cleanup drive, I separate and then burn as much of the garbage as I can in a small enclosed fire (open fires are illegal) before I give it to these guys because, as a scout and engineer, I burn it with way less smoke and pollution than a smoldering heap fire in the middle of a crowded residential area and I don't burn styrofoam, nylon, pvc, rubber, or ABS (which have no recycle value and create lots of toxic smoke even with the best incineration). Wet Waste, Dry Recyclable, and Rest need to be separated or there is no feasible way to dispose of the garbage and most of it WILL be burned (if not in your neighborhood, then somewhere else). If you pay extra to have the waste in your neighborhood collected daily and separated for you (I'm looking at you Jayanagar) you only suck disposal resources away from other parts of the city where they will burn even more garbage as a result. Marc P. Kaebel Minti Jain The wild animals are only present because the food is present. Take the food away and the animals will go out of the city to be a useful part of nature where their numbers are kept in check by predators rather than breeding in unlimited numbers and creating a health risk for themselves and all the people around them.Hopefully these specific people (license plate number KA 03 B 2453) are reprimanded for improper execution of their jobs, and their peers take note. However, without garbage separation at the household level, enforced from all sides, there is no solution to this problem.Posted by Lex Maxwell on Tuesday, February 9, 2016
