Even though priced twice as high as regular Nandini milk at Rs 70, demand is outstripping supply, forcing at least one producer to announce that milk would be made available on a first come, first served basis.According to milk suppliers, demand for organic milk, especially the milk of Malnad Gidda Tali breed, Geer breed, is quite high. Pradeep, a sales incharge at Punyakoti dairy products, said a litre of organic milk from their dairy cost a steep Rs70. “But one litre of organic milk is equal to two litres of ordinary cow’s milk,” said Pradeep, explaining the benefits of organic milk. The high cost is mostly due to lack of availability. Milk suppliers say that organic milk producers produce only limited quantities of milk and are unable to cater to the high demand. “Because of this situation, we have decided to distribute our milk on a first come, first served basis,” said Pradeep.Nutritionists point out that growing consumption of organic milk has been due to the increasing health awareness among the public. “Organic milk is considered as a solution to many health challenges. Its by-products are also considered as an effective cure for many diseases,” said nutritionist Jyothi Achar
