Submitted by alvin on Mon, 2016-05-16 17:57 Manipal: A philately exhibition as part of summer exhibition and workshop was held at Melaka Manipal Medical College, Manipal, on Saturday. Twenty-six philatelists - 15 from Dakshina Kannada Philatelic and Numismatic Association and 11 from Manipal University Philatelic and Numismatics Club - put up their collections for display at the workshop which was organised by the MUPNC along with Rotary Club Manipal Town to promote philately as a hobby among the youth. The exhibition proved to be huge success as it received over 400 visitors. There were 55 collections totalling 105 frames. Two collections on currency and seven of coins were displayed on 28 tables. Interestingly, of the 26 philatelists, eight were first-timers and five were children. The exhibition was inaugurated by Dr N Udupa, Director Research (health Sciences). Datuk Dr Abdul Razzak, Pro Vice-Chancellor, Dr. Jaspal Singh Sahota, Dean, MMMC, Melaka, Dr Ullas Kamath, Dean, MMMC, Manipal and Dr. Suma Nair, Director, Student Affairs, Manipal University were present during the inauguration. Dr Suma Nair welcomed the gathering and Dr Udupa spoke about his interest in stamps. Dr Geetha Maiya, Deputy Director Student Affairs gave the vote of thanks. The workshop was conducted by Dr Joseph Thomas, Professor, Department of Urology, KMC, Manipal and Jayaprakash Rao, Secretary DAKAPANA. Dr Joseph Thomas gave a talk on “Story of the Rupee” and Mr Jayaprakash Rao gave a talk and demonstration on “Introduction to Stamps”. Children below the age of 15 were given free stamps as a motivation to continue the hobby.
